An Overview Of Allergy From Rice Milk

10th August 2011 by Bronchitis No Comments

Individuals allergic to milk are as susceptible towards suffering from rice milk allergies as any other normal individual; there’s no link between the two allergy types. This is because rice milk is absolutely devoid of any dairy product. The source of rice milk is rice plant; if you are allergic to rice, you will also develop allergic reactions on drinking rice milk.

Rice allergy is more common in countries where rice is consumed by large share of the population. One instance of such nation is Japan; 10% of the native Japanese are allergic to rice. Conversely, the number of native Americans diagnosed with rice allergy is quite less due to the limited use of rice in the US. Food allergy affects 75% of the children with both parents having food allergies. But, the food type responsible for causing allergic reactions in an individual might differ from that of his parents. Unlike most other allergy varieties, the frequency of rice allergy is more among the adults than in kids.

Rice intolerance is a condition marked by problems in digesting certain ingredients present in rice. Being intolerant towards rice does not mean that you have a rice allergy. Rice allergy is mostly triggered by the rice pollens present in the rice plants. Allergic reactions occurring due to rice pollen are similar to all other allergies occurring due to pollens.

Usually, the symptoms rice milk allergy start appearing within a thirty minutes to 1 hour of consuming rice milk. The most common signs of the condition include: facial swelling (particularly around the eyes and mouth of the patient), hives, itching, breathing difficulties, swelling in the throat, wheezing, heart palpitations, lightheadedness, vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea etc. If the condition turns extremely serious, the patient might also experience symptoms like change of skin color (the skin gets a bluish tinge), reduced oxygen levels etc; in this situation the patient might collapse. One unusual sign of rice allergy is anaphylaxis; to recover from this condition you must seek medical attention immediately.

An individual allergic to rice milk, must also stop having other rice products like rice flour (commonly used to make spring rolls and rice noodles). People with rice allergy might also develop allergic reactions from foods of same crop family, for example maize, barley, rye, wheat, corn etc. Studies have shown that individuals diagnosed to have rice allergies often are also allergic to fruits like apples and peaches. Some individuals allergic to rice are allowed to have wild rice, but majority are not allowed to do so as they also develop reactions from wild rice.
